The quick version: Start with one or two jersey hijabs, one comfortable undercap, and magnets so you can skip pins. Learn the basic wrap first. Everything else can come later.
Do not buy a rainbow of colours you will not wear. To begin, you really only need a couple of good-quality jersey hijabs in colours you actually reach for, like black, a soft neutral and one you love. Jersey is forgiving, grips well and does not go see-through, which makes it the kindest fabric to learn on. Add one comfortable undercap and a set of magnets, and you are ready.

The usual ones: buying too many scarves too fast, starting with slippery chiffon, tying the cap far too tight (which causes headaches and hair loss), and expecting it to look perfect immediately. None of these mean you are bad at this. They are just the learning curve, and everyone goes through it.
There is no rule that says it has to be perfect or all at once. Many people, especially reverts without family to guide them, feel they will never crack the code. You will.
