Hijab Styles Explained: Find the Wrap That Suits You

The wrap you choose changes your whole look and how secure it feels all day. Here are the core hijab styles, what each one suits, and how to get them right.

The quick version: New to it? Start with the basic wrap. Busy or active day? Go turban or slip-on. Formal event? A side drape or layered style. Want maximum coverage and flow? The maxi shawl.

The core styles

The basic wrap

The everyday classic. The scarf sits over an underscarf, one side longer, wrapped around and pinned at the shoulder. Simple, secure and endlessly adaptable.

Best for

Daily wear, beginners, any fabric, quick mornings.

Keep in mind

A grippy underscarf makes it far easier with smooth fabrics.

The turban

Fully wrapped and tucked with no loose ends. Clean, modern and great when you want your neckline visible or need it out of the way.

Best for

Active days, workouts, a sleek modern look, hot weather.

Keep in mind

Coverage is different from a draped style. Choose based on your preference.

The side drape (layered)

One side is draped longer and softly layered across the front or shoulder. The dressiest of the everyday styles and beautiful in flowy fabrics.

Best for

Weddings, events, chiffon and satin, a soft elegant finish.

Keep in mind

Slippery fabrics need a couple of pins to hold the drape in place.

The slip-on (al-amira)

A two-piece pull-on style, or a one-piece instant hijab. No wrapping, no pins, ready in seconds. The easiest option there is.

Best for

School, sport, travel, kids, anyone short on time.

Keep in mind

Less adjustable than a wrapped scarf, so fit and size matter more.

The maxi shawl

An oversized rectangular scarf that gives full coverage and a flowing drape. Cosy, generous and very forgiving.

Best for

Full coverage, cooler weather, a relaxed elegant look.

Keep in mind

More fabric means more bulk. A lighter weight keeps it comfortable.

Which style for which day

A quick rule of thumb: reach for the slip-on or turban when you are busy or moving, the basic wrap for normal days, and a side drape or maxi when you want to feel dressed up. Your fabric matters just as much as the wrap, so if you have not yet, read our hijab fabric guide.

FAQs

What is the easiest hijab style for beginners?

The slip-on, then the basic wrap. Both are forgiving and need very little practice. Add a grippy underscarf and you are set.

Which style is most secure for active days?

The turban or a slip-on. With nothing loose to come undone, they stay put through movement and sport.

Which style suits my face shape?

That is worth its own guide. See the right hijab for your face shape for how to match volume and drape to your features.
