Creases in your chiffon that will not budge, mystery stains, a black hijab going grey, jersey pilling after one wash. These are the small care problems that drive everyone mad. Here are the fixes, one by one.
Quick answer: Most hijab care problems come down to washing habits. A cold, gentle wash in a mesh bag, no fabric softener and air drying fixes creasing, pilling and fading for almost every fabric.
Chiffon creases from folding, and a hot iron can make it worse or even melt it. The gentlest fix is steam: hang it in the bathroom while you run a hot shower, or use a garment steamer on low. If you must iron, use the lowest setting with a cotton cloth on top. Then store chiffon rolled, not folded, so the creases do not come back.
Those mystery marks are often hair oils, makeup or sweat transferring onto the fabric. For oil-based stains, a tiny bit of dish soap worked in before your normal wash helps lift them. Wash sooner rather than later, and if you wear oils in your hair, a full undercap stops them reaching a light chiffon.
Black fades from hot water, harsh detergent and sun drying. Wash in cold water, turn to a gentle detergent, and always dry in the shade, since sunlight is the fastest way to grey out a black hijab. Washing darks separately and inside a laundry bag helps them keep their depth for longer.
That dull, bobbly look after the first wash is friction and heat. Wash jersey cold on a gentle cycle inside a laundry bag, skip the fabric softener, and air dry rather than tumble. For pills that are already there, a fabric shaver gently brings back a smoother finish.
Some fabrics thin slightly with washing and read more see-through, especially light modal and chiffon. An opaque undercap solves the coverage side, and for prayer or when you want full opacity, choose a denser fabric or double a light one. If a hijab was see-through from day one, that is the fabric, not the wash.
Steam it, do not use a hot iron. Hang it in a steamy bathroom or use a low steamer, then store it rolled rather than folded.
Cold wash, gentle detergent, dry in the shade, and wash darks separately in a laundry bag.
Heat and friction. Wash cold and gentle in a bag, skip softener, air dry, and use a fabric shaver on existing pills.
