How do you manage long, thick hair without the camel hump?

anonymous·Aug 23, 2026·31 replies

My hair is long and thick and my bun makes a big bump at the back of my head, the camel hump. Scrunchie, claw clip, low bun, I have tried them all. What actually works to keep it smooth?

The trick with thick hair is to spread the volume, not pile it. A low, flat bun at the nape (not high on the crown) plus a wider undercap that covers it smoothly makes the biggest difference. High buns are what create the hump. Full method with pictures: how to hide the camel hump.

Split it into two low buns, one either side at the nape. Distributes the bulk so there is no single lump. Total game changer for thick hair.

A flat claw clip pinned horizontally instead of a bun. Holds the length flat against your head rather than bunching it into a ball.

Undercap size matters, a snug one flattens everything underneath. The loose ones let the bump push through.
